Runes are special items that can inserted into socketed items to grant them additional properties. They can be found as drops from monsters, chests, or other sources, or traded with other players.
There are 33 different runes in Diablo 2 Resurrected, ranging from El (the lowest) to Zod (the highest). The higher the rune, the rarer and more powerful it is. Runes can also upgraded by using a Horadric Cube recipe, which requires three runes of the same type and a gem. Runes can used individually or combined with other runes to create runewords. To use a rune, you need to have a socketed item with enough empty sockets for the rune (or runeword). To insert a rune into a socketed item, simply drag and drop it onto the item.
